  GUIDE TO SHOKEI-EN.
To see the whole of the Shokei-en(Chang-
kyong-won), the Prince Yi Houschold Garden,
follow the dotted line in the plan beginniugbeginning
at point No. 1 and finishing at No. 21. In
the woods west of point No. 21 are to be
seen among the trees some painted buildings,
and it is here that the reserved section of the
garden is situated.
The ground covered by the garden was
formerly the site of a palace of the Koryo
Dynasty, which had its capital at Kaijo
(Songdo). About 450 years age, King
Songchong, the nineth sovereign of the Yi
Dynasty, which succeeded the Koryo Dynasty
on its downfall as the ruling family in this
peninsula, caused a palace to be built here.
The greater part of the palace was later
destroyed by fire, a hall called Meisei-den
(Myong chyong-chyon) alone escaping. This
still remains intact, and is the oldest building
in Seoul. Other building of the palace were
later rebuilt and are now used as annexes
to the Museum. The ground occupied by
the Zoological Garden was formerly the site
of a meteoro logical station called Horokaku
(Porukak), while the large pond in the Bo-
tanical Garden was the place where in form-
er times experimental agricultural work was
carried on for the inspection of the reigning
King. The turf-clad ground extending from
a building called Eikwado (Yungwha-tong)
in the reserved section of the garden to the
main green house of the Botanical Garden
was formerly used as an examination ground
and here candidates for civil and military
posts in the government sat for examination.
The whole garden, so rich in historical as-
sociations, was in a ruined condition. Resto-
ration was started in November 1909, and
the present Museum, Zoological Garden,
and Botanical Garden established, and the
ground is now the finest garden in Chosen,
the Museum contains a collection of about
20.000 specimens of old Korean art and
other objects of historical interest the Bo-
tanical Garden about 10.000 potted speei-
mens of more than 200 varities of flora,
and the Zoological Garden about 400 Speci-
mens of fauna, all these institutions being
opened to the publiepublic daily, except on Thursday.
